documents written 500 plus years ago with pen and ink are. Some sources say that data stored on CDs will be unreadable in less than 50 years. As for CDs/DVDs being indestructible ~ well we all know that is bollox. A mere fingerprint can distort the sound on a CD. Meanwhile my Vinyls and even early records are still going strong after more than 50 years ~ in some cases 60 years plus.

Well said that man!

Quill parchment vinyl and Luddites rule. happy088

Only those wearing this weeks trendy high fashion statement blinkers consider all this high tech bollox to be worthwhile.

The wise money for the highest of quality and unbeatable 'high definition' is on going places and using your EYES to watch and see things live in their natural surroundings.
No tv or fancy pants dvd could possibly have come within a million miles of the stunning gorgeous scenery I ogled at LIVE up Snowdon on Thursday. cloud9:

Well going by what you techno freaks are saying, 'things' can't get much better now, so what you all going to do when the ultimate has been reached and the novelty has worn off?
Sony and all the other suspects are going to go bust because they haven't got anything else vastly superior to develop any further, so then the parts will become unavailable consigning all this electrical jigory pokery stuff to the tip.

Do you feel all warm comfy and at peace with the werld after you've watched your new 'this years MUST HAVE gadgetery thingy'?

Ah but self destructing CD's can be a good thing. Look at modern popular music, while there is good stuff out there you get swamped by manufactured popshite bands, repetitive dance crap ripping off 70's disco hits or drugged up morons who's 'best work' sounds as tortured as Snoop getting his prostate checked with a red hot poker.

Would you want to unleash that horror on future generations?

Talkin' of which, my new 'old' car has a cassette player in it, and I therefore dragged out all me old cassttes from the 60's/70's.
I thought they were supposed to become unplayable after a couple of decades? confused:
No problem here chief! Luvleee. cloud9:

I think you are comparing chalk and cheese and confusing yourself...  noooo:

I don't think (nor did I say) that Blu-Ray gave me a better life... I'm a long-term (>20 years) Hi-Fi and cinema enthusiast and Blu-Ray is the next, logical, significant step forward which provides better picture and sound than have previously been available. I undoubtedly get more enjoyment from the 'cinema experience' with Blu-Ray than was possible with my previous player (though there have been other 'enhancements' over the past four years since I bought it that I have not purchased).

On the other hand I love the outdoors and walking across the island - we're incredibly fortunate here in that we have mountains, forests and miles of coastline which are all unfenced and accessible. We also have little light pollution which allows the most amazing stargazing experiences in the evenings... I love that and appreciate it but it is separate from my love of cinema.

So, two very different things...

Yes BM, and you are very fortunate, and am pleased you also enjoy the outdoor life too! cloud9:
Shame many others are either not as fortunate as us that appreciate it all, or are just too bloody bone idle and / or ignorant to get out and see what the world has to offer......LIVE and in front of their very own eyes.
I'm not really critising you for your love of all this modern hi tech stuff, just a bit bemused/amused by it all that's all.
I suppose I'm a bit like that over cars tbh, not that I'm a particulary big fan of the modern electrical shite that is now fitted to them as standard.
I just see all the complications in user unfriendliness, unreliability, and the inabilty to fix stuff when it breaks. It angers and annoys the shit out of me tbh. cussing:
Built in life span and impossible to fix without all the right expensive and complicated equipment has stiched us all up.... us techno freaks and car lovers alike are well and truly stuffed and cornered by manufacturers now. Banghead

Rememeber those halcyon days when the tv broke and it was just a matter of replacing a valve, or the car was difficult to start so you replaced the plugs points and condensor. Bliss. cloud9:

A supposedly superior format of DVD that gives better visual and sound effects from DVDs that cost about three times as much as ordinary DVDs.
If you remember the arguments about Betamax versus VCR ~ Blue Ray is one side of a debate about what follows DVD.
TBH given my aging hearing and sight I doubt that I would notice much difference for the extra money but gadget freaks love it ... until something else comes along.
Not quite as you describe hound…  noooo:

New High Definition TVs can display up to 1,080 horizontal lines whereas the old telly standard we’ve had for what, forty years or so could only show 625 lines.

The old DVD standard of which you speak could only produce 576 horizontal picture lines so a new standard was required that could match the quality of new HD televisions.

There has already been a battle similar to the betamax VHS one that we remember well. This time the two players (snigger) were HD DVD and Blu-Ray DVD, both backed by different Japanese manufacturers and film studios.

The ‘battle’ has been won recently by Blu-Ray.

Blu-Ray offers five times the storage of a normal DVD which allows high definition video and audio storage. A Blu-Ray disc can display (on the appropriate TV or projector) 1,080 non-interlaced horizontal picture lines and multiple audio tracks plus loads of extras.

The difference between a normal DVD and HD DVD is absolutely staggering, almost twice the resolution of an old DVD – even the hound’s old eyes will notice the difference.

Modern players (like my new Sony) can also ‘upscale’ standard definition (SD) DVDs to the 1080 standard too.

Soon all DVDs will be released as Blu-Ray and the price will fall dramatically.

The picture quality and sound are amazing, we use the ps3, so not had to buy a seperate player
