What is a "Hero"
« on: January 16, 2009, 04:07:55 PM »
The mayor of New York is hailing the pilot of the crashed plane a "hero"

Was he being heroic or just 'doing his job'.

Surely a hero is someone who risks their own life to save others. He was saving his own life and incidently saved everyone else.

Agreed, he was just doing his job...

That's what they train endlessly for and earn vast sums to do...

And indeed this particular pilot was, apparently, the "emergencies" training officer for that airline. Right man in the right place

Agreed - however I will  dish out the praise on him that he does merit as I can't remember a time when I have heard of a large plane crash when all the passengers have survived  happ096

Mr Bloomberg said the writer Ernest Hemingway has defined heroism as "grace under pressure".
