New light bulbs
« on: January 25, 2009, 11:36:46 AM »
It has just dawned on me that it is virtually impossible to buy proper light bulbs as a result of some blasted EU directive. They are all these frightful 'energy saving' ones. Of which more in a moment.  evil:

As Growler has reported we have a coup-le of chandelier type light fittings here which take candle bulbs. Wehn these go pop we shall, I assume, have to replace them with those stupid things that look like this

 noooo:

Or we could get some of these (we would need 20 in all at any one time)

They are £7.99 EACH!!

And if they break?

Who can we hang?  evil:

What do you mean if?

In your hands it is a certainty.

I shall be on to my stockbroker first thing in the morning to buy Osram shares.

(Seriously, they last for ages compared to fillerment fillymant incondecent old fashioned ones and I have ended my initial crusade against them)

Then resart it DS with immediate effect. I have had to replace two of these "new" bulbs this weekend. One in the entrance hall and one on the landing. Both were installed at the same time less than a year ago when we took the decision to "go green" in an attempt to reduce our electricity bill. The "new" bulbs were, I admit a free gift from British Gas (see posts passim) but they do not get a great deal of use, positioned as described. Had I paid for them I would have been mighty miffed. Meanwhile we await the other 10 bulbs, replaced with freebies at the same time, to fail also. It is worthy of note that my electricity bill has not reduced by a single penny ~ rather it has gone up.
Meanwhile the replacements give better light, making the stairs much safer, are 60 watt old fashioned types purchased yesterday from the local Spar Shop for 49pence each.
I used to have a handle on life but it broke.

I can only go by my own experience.
It may be a result of our supply being a bit wonky, being at the end of a rather long overhead line, but the old ones used to flicker a lot and rarely lasted a year.
About 3 years ago I got a 'trade pack' of 24 of the new fangled ones very cheaply from a pal, and replaced the old ones as they failed.
So far none (0) of the new ones have gone.
No idea about the running costs though, it is difficult so separate the business and domestic consumption.  whistle:
