Personal problems and work.
« on: March 12, 2009, 02:31:32 PM »
I'm very busy at the moment, in fact completely 'snowed under' with work. My little team of three is now one. I lost one to maternity leave, earlier than expected due to illness so no proper handover and now the other member has been off since last Friday afternoon for 'personal reasons'. It seems he is going through a marital breakup, not that he's married but it amounts to same thing.

Now, I can understand and sympathise with him, having gone through similar myself but he has left me struggling to get everything done and that's impossible. All I can do is the most urgent work, everything else is getting left.

I'm getting angry and resentful but should I? After all I'm sure this chap considers his problems overide his work commitments but he's aware of the work situation. Even when there was the two of us we were beginning to feel that we would need a temp to cover some of the work that was starting to pile up.

Also, during my marriage breakup I still continued to turn up and do my job so why can't he?

Right ~ I feel better for getting that off my chest.

Back to work.

Trouble is the simple answer is get a temp in but by the time you've shown him/her the tasks you want them to do you might as well do them yourself and then tomorrow the agency send you another temp and you have to retrain them all over again. Best to sack the two idling b@st@rds and get new staff but of course one is no longer allowed to do that. Never employ anyone of child bearing age ~ but you're not allowed to do that either.

Hopefullly we can act as an outlet for your feelings on the subject ~ any other practical help you only have to ask but I charge by the hour or part thereof. ;)

Neither are 'idling bastards'. They are both good workers which makes it worse. I have been training one of our receptionists to do some of the data entry work. Not difficult work once you get into a routine but time consuming, that should help.

I had an afternoon doing that once ~ knackering work.

Whenever I've employed people I've always found the training up time the most costly, in all ways. A close friend found the same; we used to console ourselves on Friday nights with beers and JD chasers  lol:
