Only use system restore as a a last resort, ie if you are totally desperate and nigh on suicidal.
Tis better to boot from recovery cd (high hopes of that being available) and recovering from there.
Yeah ~ and who ever has a recovery CD? noooo:

Four laptops and two PCs in the house and not one came with a recovery disc. One PC keeps prompting me to "create" such a disc but rejects every attempt on the grounds that "The disc is too small" ~ OK geeks ~ answer that one.

I used to have a handle on life but it broke.

It's not necessarily simply a RAM problem - we had a few laptops at work that did this and the old "battery out" bodge sometimes werked, like...and, no, I cannot explain why.
