Depends where you live, how upgraded your local exchange is and whether or not you have cable access. There is no short answer to the question.

Most people in this area think BT is shite, we cannot get any cable network because there is no cable available and the exchange is not due to be "unbundled" for another two years so "Talk Talk" is also ruled out.

Personally I use "Utilities Warehouse" which gives me reasonable speeds (but then I live within 500 metres of the exchange) and includes telephone line rental and gives me free telephone calls to any UK landline at any time. Total cost for landline (includes call waiting/answerphone and a second incoming number), broadband (unlimited downloads) and calls to UK landlines 24/7 = £37.50 per month which is the best value I can find anywhere.
I used to have a handle on life but it broke.

We can't get cable...

It is a BT landline so they would be the obvious choice but their customer services are all arsewipes...

Orange seem to have a good package with free calls to Cyprus too...

I took my landline away from BT and signed it over to UW. The Post Office also do a good deal and take over the landline. The only drawback is that the line has to be serviced by BT and they will always put those who use other providers to the back of the queue when repairs are needed.

It is a bit like choosing who should provide your gas or leccy bill. You don't have to stay with BT although they will maintain the lines and the lines will still travel via their exchanges.

The biggest plus for me was seeing the call charges on my phone bill fall from £50 a quarter to nil.

Problems with Orange experienced by a friend locally are horrendous. He thinks it is because they are French. He was with Freeserve until Orange took it over and says the service has gone downhill ever since. He complains constantly of dropped connections and slow downloads and he lives 50 meters closer to the exchange than I do. Unfortunately his is a business account and he doesn't want the expense of changing stationery, notifying contacts etc that a change would involve.
Also worthy of note that my Mobile used to be with Orange and reception in this and many other areas was shite. I am now mobile with ASDA (cheaper than chips at 8p a minute calls and 4p for texts) and have no problems to date with reception anywhere, even in the house, which was always an Orange problem.

Which is dearer than mine, nor does it include line rental and phone calls. The price I gave also included VAT. GM's techies download speeds are no better than mine ~ in fact unless you have cable you will not do better with anyone as it all travels along BT lines.

True enough, I suspect there is a discount for them somewhere on the employee bonus site which would explain a lot but thought I'd give an alternative anyway.

Rather than just reading/listening to the few in here that actually know what they are talking about, a wider view can be obtained from here:

I'm a Freeserve/orange user. Never had a problem. Not the cheapest but why change something that works well for the sake of a couple of quid?

My brother uses AOL ( eeek:) but he likes it and has recently got a new deal with them.

AOL ok here at the moment too. I keep dithering about changing, but can't be doing with the mither tbh.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
