You all need to identify your flu friend - someone who will go to the doctors /  chemist / supermarket etc  for you to pick up prescriptions , food and such like - as you should stay at home.

The vast majority of those that have died from swine flu have all, allegedly, had "underlying health problems".

That's probably true.

But why on earth haven't they told us what these problems were? How are we meant to try and judge how dangerous this virus is, unless we know how ill you have to be in the first place for it to be a real worry. If they had rabies, lung cancer, double pneumonia, malaria, ebola or something like that then I would think "fine, they were probably going pop their cork anyway".

But what if they only had a bit of mild asthma? Or athletes foot? Or hay-fever? I would certainly start being a bit more concerned if that were the case.

So why the secrecy? Or is it a conscious decision to keep the full facts at bay as long as possible to avoid potential panic?

They are very quick to ram fuck-witted advice like "Catch it, bin it, kill" down our throats and send Janet and John leaflets to all and sundry, but this is typical of this administration - being seen to be doing something whilst all the time they simply don't have a clue about the real issues. Just look at the economy, for example.

I have no doubt that someone in my immediate family will contract the virus - it would just be nice to know whether I am more likely to buy them a box of tissues and some Lockets, or a wooden casket.

'Snot too much to ask, is it?

This is what I have been given for my team

Staff in High Risk Groups

The following advice is designed to protect staff in high risk groups from the complications of flu while maintaining staff attendance at work as much as possible. It is important to avoid unnecessary absence that could last for the whole period of the Pandemic.

People in the following high risk groups are not necessarily more likely to be infected but they may be more at risk of getting serious complications if they catch flu:-

People with:-
Chronic lung disease
Chronic heart disease
Chronic kidney disease
Chronic liver disease
Chronic neurological disease
Immunosuppression (whether caused by disease or treatment)
Diabetes mellitus
People who have had drug treatment for asthma within the past three years
Pregnant women
People aged 65 and older
Children under 5

Advice to staff in high risk groups and their managers:-

There will be varying degrees of risk within each of the groups above and only the GP can advise individual staff members of the risks associated with their personal clinical circumstances.

To do this, GPs also need to know the measures in place to protect vulnerable staff from possible sources of infection in the workplace. They can then see whether or not risks at work are any greater than the risks the staff member will face in the community if they stay off work.

Management staff should talk to staff in high risk groups about the measures that can be taken to reduce their risk of infection, ideally before a case arises. The individual staff member can then judge whether or not there is a significantly increased risk of infection involved in coming to work compared to the risks they will face anyway if they do not come to work.

If the staff member is not reassured by these precautions they should seek advice from their GP. They should have the above information clearly prepared as GPs may not have time to ask exploratory questions.

It would seem that in this house only two are likely to survive as three have some (more than one) of the underlying risk factors  scared2:

Best spend our days indoors and away from people until we can be vaccinated then ~ tho' Minmus cannot be vaccinated as they grow the vaccine on egg to which he is allergic  ::)
