Continual Computer Challenges - No driver No cry
« on: April 29, 2009, 07:12:54 PM »
I am trying to copy some pictures onto a CD ...

My DVD / CD drive worked fine yesterday .

Today it says:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.

 Banghead Banghead Banghead

Of course checking for solutions does bog all. So thinking I'm being clever by doing a system restore from a week ago - still says the same thing.

So have uninstalled the driver and tried to install again....

no joy....

My usual answer is to switch the whole thing off at the wall (pretend power cut as far as the machine is concerned) and then have a cup of tea. Then I switch it back on. 9 times out of 10 it solves the problem although all techies that I have mentioned this system to have laughed and said it doesn't work like that. ~ Well it does for me.

About two and a half hours ago I got the blue screen of death followed by an AVG announcement that I was under attack by a virus (Trojanhorse Agent_r.GX to be exact) I pulled the internet connection immediately as I had to take the boys to fencing classes.
Since getting back I have been talking to you lot via the Linux driven Asus lapbook whilst the PC has done a Scan and Purge using good old free AVG 8.5 (last updated lunchtime today). It has found and purged the virus it tells me so this post is a try out to see if the Blue Screen of Death returns ....... So far ~ so good.

Always glad to help.  happy088

I cant remember when I last used my CD writer, apart from ejecting the tray and using it as a stand for a can of Tennants Extra.

Sign of the times eh? Or maybe its because I'm not at work anymore and cant nick blank CD's from the stationary cupboard.  rubschin:

whistle: whistle: whistle:Not me mister. Honest. Other things like wireless cards, a laptop, 2 boxes of paper, memory sticks, mouses, keyboards, pens, highlighters, staplers and staples, filing cabinets, a desk, a few TFT screens and as much cabling as you can possibly imagine seemed to walk out of the door though.  whistle: whistle: whistle:

[serious]

Click Start>>>Control Panel>>>System>>>Hardware>>>Device Manager

Then right click on the CD ROM drive and uninstall it.

Then Re-boot.

If the drive is not fucked window$ will re-find it and install the driver
