Amazon are also offering 7 at a "special reduced price" for "pre-release orders" but they add that quantities are limited. They also caution that 7 does not come with a browser and that if you choose to install it you will need to also install a browser.

I shall be avoiding it like the plague because, frankly, the less I have to do with Microsoft the happier I will be, also I will wait until the new Google kit comes out. Meantime Linux and Firefox suit me nicely thank you.

Cough Cough ~ I did see it ~I'm a Beagle not a Blind Dog  whistle:

But I added the important information that Amazon is only offering limited numbers AND are advising about the browser. Amazon are sending the info by email to ALL their past customers stressing the "Discount" available to those who get in early with an order.

Other companies are not telling people about the need for a browser until they have got them in the shop buying 7 and then they are hoping to sell the unwary (and that applies to most of their customers) a seprate browser package.

I see Amazon have run out of the special offer low-cost versions although I gather that Tesco and PC World still have them.

I'm thinking this might be a good product actually...  redface:

You get both 32-bit and 64-bit versions in the package. So, by stuffing a load of (cheap) memory on a suitable motherboard you should see a significant increase in performance over XP (which is limited to ~3Gbytes RAM unless you have the 64-bit version).

The only issue I see is that the EU is preventing Micro$oft selling an 'upgrade' product so you would have to back up all your data and do a clean install... Okay in theory but I have loads of bits and pieces of software that I prolly can't find the registration codes for...

Have you checked to see if your existing s/ware will run under the new OS?

If by some miracle everything is compatible you may be able to find the serial keys by using regedit on your current system BM.

If you expand the local machine and software lists you should get a list of everything you installed by software house. Some programs store their key here.

If that doesnt work & tech support is no help the only other option I could think of, as long as you own the original programs, would be to google serial keys or keygens for them. I would stress that this is not something I wouldn't consider unless I was out of options.

While I'm in the computer room...

My server packed up last week... the thing was full of cat hair and overheated... I took it apart and cleaned all the shite out but it never werked again.  Banghead

However, I bought a cheap new motherboard to replace it and stuffed 4Gbytes of RAM in it. I'm running XP Professional 64-bit on the board so it can use all the memory.

Anyhoo... using the same Pentium D processor, discs, etc. the new system is significantly faster than the old one which had only 2Gbytes of RAM.

Ipso facto, I suspect that my proposal to upgrade from XP to Windows 7 64-bit with oodles of (cheap) RAM is sound.

My case rests.
