I suspect it was simply a play on the surname ~ if this helps:
Quote
Rip Torn was born Elmore Rual Torn, Jr. on February 6, 1931 in Temple, Texas. "Rip" is a family name, taken by generations of Torn men and bestowed on Elmore by his father, who was also called "Rip.

The Mormon thing of calling every bloke "Elder" is equally confusing.

Good job the cabbie doesn't often have to stick his head in the Public bar of the Tabernacle Arms and shout "Taxi for Elder?"
I mostly despair
