Faithfully / Sincerely
« on: June 25, 2009, 09:47:25 AM »
This is one of those things that I just have a complete mental blockage on - not matter how many times I am informed how to remember the etiquette of letter writing.

Are there easy ways to remember when you should use formally or sincerely at the end of the letter or what other sign offs are appropriate ?

Think it is faithfully if you are in hope of a reply, sincerely if not. However, I am more than happy to believe I am wrong!

Never put two S's together. If it is Dear Sir/Madam, you should end it yours faithfully. If it is Dear Mr Sven, Mrs Sven you should end it yours sincerely

"Your Obedient Servant" should do nicely.  ;)

I have always used faithfully when it's Dear Sir/Madam or more usually Dear Sirs and sincerely when I'm addessing a person as in Dear Miss Demeanor or Dear Nick.
