Property prices in Cornwall have shot up, between second homes, holiday properties and student lets trying to get an affordable place down here is pretty much a non starter unless you want a holiday home you have to vacate for 2 months every year unless you want to live in St Twelvefingers or some other isolated village in the hinterlands.

I don't disagree with you, just saying that there is a problem down here.

Yeah , I know as is common knowledge my father used to live there ...(step-mum still does and I found out today if i out-live her ...I will own a house in Tregony !!)..

But she is the wrong person to highlight this ....if it was someone trying to "climb the ladder"  in a normal way ..I would have all sympathy ....

Where I am, between the holiday homes and the properties bought up to be converted into student housing I gave up on getting on the property ladder years ago. As much as the local council makes noise about HMOs they have done absolutely bugger all about it.

Unless you want to hamstring yourself by either getting a static caravan (£60-70k+) or forking out for a holiday home you can only stay in for 10 months a year (£150k+) you are realistically looking at £450-500k on the low end if you are lucky so for a first time buyer given the average salaries and wages down here you are pretty much buggered even if you are desperate enough to try for a 100% mortgage.

The council wanted a university because they thought the increased student numbers would have money rolling in throughout the year not just during the tourist season or from retirees who have moved down here to make up for the lost income from exorbitant business rates (usually at least as high as the building rent) due to the amount of places closing down, Hell even M&S shut down and left and that place was an institution here since 1933. Unfortunately they were so blinded by the thought of the money they never considered the infrastructure upgrades that would need to be in place for a massive increase in numbers for it to be both viable for the students and fair for the existing population.
