Just when I think things can't get any more screwed up Minneapolis councillors are looking at ways to disband the police force to replace with a non violent body.....

Am I the only person here who is starting to get a feeling of impending doom...  facepalm:

There are clearly problems with the police force in that city but to completely disband the force and replace them with "a community-oriented, nonviolent public safety and outreach capacity" is going to make you really popular with criminals. I'd love to see how a non violent outreach capacity would combat gang crime, murders and rapes in such a way as to make the city's population feel safe again.

http://www.citypages.com/news/minneapolis-city-council-members-consider-disbanding-the-police/570993291

If you want to deal with the problems you have with the police in Minneapolis then contact the State Police or IA from a different state and ask them to perform a root and branch investigation, hell you could even ask the FBI just make sure that the entire process and any subsequent criminal proceedings are make completely transparent.

And LA is just as bad. How many police officers are going to be sacrificed because you've decided to defund them by $150m for a bend the knee publicity stunt? Just under 12,5000,000 people live in LA

https://www.forbes.com/sites/jackbrewster/2020/06/04/la-mayor-slashes-lapd-budget-as-calls-to-defund-police-slowly-pick-up-steam/

Have any of these idiots even considered what it will mean if this movement to defund the police nationally succeeds? The only people who will be safe from criminals will be those rich enough to afford private security because if you think that crime levels have been bad up to now (riots nonwithstanding) then you have no idea what will follow once people realise that the authorities are no longer capable of upholding the law.

The more I see of the riots and read about stupid shite like this the more inclined I am to contact my brother and tell him to get himself and his family the hell out of America before it's too late.  Banghead

A dystopian nightmare...  Banghead

I've been reading elsewhere that the issue there (and in the UK) is that the unions are so strong.

Essentially, you can't discipline or fire a cop that is bad at his/her job. Throw in diversity targets and gender equality and you have a 'force' that is simply useless...

So the trick is not to get rid of them but remove unions and weed out the bad ones...

Except the loudest voices right now (including members of congress) are calling for the police to be disbanded or defunded and there are now reports that the Manhattan DA is refusing to charge 'protesters' because they have a moral imperative. Police officers are seeing not only a complete lack of support but tacit support for the rioters from the state governments and are resigning in increasing numbers because they feel their position is untenable. These are the same state governments that deny people the chance to worship or peacefully protest to allow them to open their businesses so that they can feed themselves and their employees because of 'social distancing'.

New York will take years to recover, if it even can. Almost half a million of the richest inhabitants had jumped ship and left for second homes out of the state when Corona hit, home working means that more people are looking at it as a viable option because of the ridiculously high cost of living there combined with crumbling infrastructure. Now factor in the damage caused by the riots and unrestrained looting, how many businesses that are capable of reopening are going to be evaluating their options and considering moving somewhere else for safety while increasing their online retail or service presence? How many other cities may find themselves in similar situations with people and businesses leaving in order to feel safe?

At the start of this tragedy everyone was unified in wanting to see justice for George Floyd before the rioting and rhetoric started. Yes there are clear problems with excessive violence and inadequate training within the police force, with numbers somewhere between 700,000 and 1,000,000 officers across America it's obvious that there is going to be a proportion of officers who are guilty of such but it's not just against black people. Where were the protests about Tony Tempa or Justine Damond, they were just as clear cut cases but they don't fit the narrative being promoted.

I just can't see any way that this ends well.

You were close with Cortez, this time it's Omar.

Ta but that's one idiot representative.  One of those that some idiot called Donald called for them to be expelled from the country of their birth.  Don't think that helped her be reasonable

Also seems like the USA have a different meaning of the word 'defund'  In English it means zero fund, the USA based articles I've seen all talk of in terms of reduced funding
Well, whatever, nevermind

Give them time, defunding is too easy a bandwagon to jump on, especially in an election year.

And so it begins...

One thing I do question though. There is a consensus that the failings of the police force can be laid at the leadership but Minnesota has been run by Democrats pretty much since the 1930's so why wasn't any action taken sooner?

Nope

Minnesota and Minneapolis have swung between the two for ever.  Governor of Minnesota was Republican until the 2010 elections.  And surely you remember Jesse Ventura

And the Democrats position on race equality has not always been what it is now.  The infamous George Wallace was a Democrat (and of course Lincoln was a Republican)

As to this majority position with no resolution passed, it's unclear what it actually means other than a statement that a majority of the council believes there is structural racism built into its police force and it needs radical restructuring to root that out.  They may have a point.  It's certainly not the abolition of the police force that some otherwise highly respected commentators are saying it is but some of the police leadership that have sat on their hands may be having their careers severely shortened.
Well, whatever, nevermind

While I admit I did some really stupid stuff as a kid even I would have known better than to think getting bitten by a black widow would turn me into Spiderman.  noooo:
