This past weekend a 20-month-old boy was killed, a 10-year-old girl was fatally shot, and an 8-year-old suffered a graze wound to the head. A week earlier, five children were shot and killed in Chicago, including a 3-year-old boy.

Lightfoot I don't give a shite about your political leanings, support of BLM or dislike of Trump. Either do your fucking job and get a handle on the violence or admit you are incapable and ask for federal assistance to protect the citizens you are responsible for.

You have a country full of nuts, that loves putting people under pressure, is going through a massive mismanaged pandemic, has widespread poverty, is full of drugs and worse full of guns with a president determined to block any attempt to limit them and you expect one man on a limited budget in one of the worst affected cities to stop these idiot shootings?  Just not possible

The problems in Chicago have existed for far longer than the Corona crisis. The level of violence there has been high for so long it's known as Chiraq. Back in 2015 after over 18 times where at least 4 people were shot in a single incident the city was named America's mass shooting capital. There were 769 murders in 2016, August alone that year recorded 92 murders making it the most violent month in over 20 years. There were 653 murders in 2017 with the number falling further with 561 in 2018 and 492 in 2019. Now the level of violence is back up to extreme levels again with the most murders in a single day since 1991, 18 murders were committed on May 31st and over 85 shootings over that entire weekend. 

There are somewhere in the region of 70 gangs not including the various factions within them while it was shut down by her predecessor Lightfoot didn't reestablish the anti gang unit, she's done nothing to try and change the light touch sentencing for illegal firearm possession and as for the recent riots then I'd say her performance speaks for itself as the Federal Government only has limited jurisdiction. Can she fix the whole problem on her own? Of course not but giving the police greater leeway in dealing with the gangs and fighting to change the weak sentencing procedures with regards to illegal firearms are things that she could have done that would have made a difference so why hasn't she? But if you want an objective assessment of her performance then here is an interview from last month with John Catanzara, the President of the Fraternal Order of the Police.

John Catanzara is part of the problem, a classic case of why you should never have unions in police forces.  He's broken the rules numerous times using his position to promote at best sus political views and to threaten those that challenge him but effectively they can't sack him because of his union power

Catanzera may be a part of the problem but in this case he is correct, Lightfoot is a much larger threat. Either deliberately due to putting her political beliefs in front of her duty as mayor or due to gross incompetence she completely mismanaged the entire BLM riot and then during a meeting told an Alderman that he was "100% full of shit" for voicing a very valid concern over the violence spreading into the residential areas having seen his district devastated by the riots and looting and demanding a response from her when she tried to ignore him. Let's also not forget that she was the mayor who was arrogant enough to think she was more important than the peons and had her hairdresser come to her home to style her hair while the city was under lockdown. Anyone else in Chicago who tried that would have been arrested. I'd love to say that she was just a fluke but she is the latest in a long line of Chicago mayors mired in corruption and ineptitude and the city deserves a hell of a lot better.

I know little about Lightfoot but I do know Chicago and jeez she has no easy task.  Huge debts, endemic corruption in the police force, some stunningly poor areas but also a lot of money making businesses and a brilliant lake front area and parks.  Been there twice, thought I'd hate it but even with the 24/7 police sirens I loved it
 
And seeing as how she's only been mayor for a year surely it's too early to judge her

A resolution has been put forward to ban organisations that have historically supported the Confederacy or slavery in the America which may have a rather interesting effect on America politics considering the history of the Democrat party (Jim Crow, support of the Klan, certain policies by Woodrow Wilson and blocking civil rights efforts in the 60's) it will be interesting to see if any of them try to defend the party given current events. 

A great portion of the history of the Democratic Party is filled with racism and hatred. Since people are demanding we rid ourselves of the entities, symbols, and reminders of the repugnant aspects of our past, then the time has come for Democrats to acknowledge their party’s loathsome and bigoted past, and consider changing their party name to something that isn’t so blatantly and offensively tied to slavery, Jim Crow, discrimination, and the Ku Klux Klan

Especially as California is currently trying to repeal Prop. 209 which prevents the state from discriminating for or against people based on their race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin under the guise of 'allowing positive action'.

And either way the Democrats lose. It it does succeed then it's the end of their party but if it fails in democrat majority congress then the reputational damage to the party will be significant given their repeated statements that the current administration is racist and the current rabid drive to remove so called problematic statues etc. All this resolution has done is turn their own methods against them.
