We all fell in love with him. Who didn’t, right? But after you got into about the second series you got kind of like, OK, he doesn’t have any Black friends, he doesn’t eat any Caribbean food, this doesn’t feel authentic.

Apparently black characters now have to hang around with black mates all the time and eat Caribbean food (even though he isn't from the Caribbean)...

It seems that Luther was not meant to be black:

John Luther was not originally written as a Black character, with showrunner Neil Cross previously saying: “I have no knowledge or expertise or right to try to tackle in some way the experience of being a Black man in modern Britain.

“It would have been an act of tremendous arrogance for me to try to write a Black character. We would have ended up with a slightly embarrassed, ignorant, middle-class, white writer’s idea of a Black character.”

Why not just write a character and then pick the best actor to play the role...?

Does it matter if the actor they chose has a high Melanin level? I don't think most people care...

But no, he has to be stereotypically black with black friends and eating black food...  No doubt there would be complaints if a white actor was chosen and he didn't skoff fish & chips all day...?

She didn't say what the Daily Misery headline says she said.  They made up a false line about him not being black enough - a race issue, the truth is she pointed out that his portrayed lifestyle with no non white friends was somewhat unrealistic

She is clearly a racist who believes that any black character should be stereotypically black...

There is just one problem with the character, according to a BBC diversity chief: he’s not authentically black enough. Miranda Wayland cited the popular crime drama as an example of a series that is only superficially diverse, as the corporation seeks for more convincing and rounded portrayals of minority groups.

“When it first came out everybody loved the fact that Idris Elba was in there — a really strong, black character lead,” said Wayland, the corporation’s head of creative diversity.
