Windoze
« on: July 05, 2009, 06:32:37 AM »
We had a power cut yesterday.

No problem, all the PCs are protected with UPS.

However, I had an open Word document on mine. No problem, 15 minutes of backup battery is loads of time to save everything. Oh no...  cussing:

Windoze has to tell me that the network drive is not available (the file server that holds all our files had already shut down). I know that of course and as I hadn't even done a 'Save As...' I'm not sure why it was relevant...

Anyhoo... after about five minutes of struggle and interminable waiting while it searched for non-existent network drives it managed or should I say agreed to save the file on my desktop.

Of course when I tried to open the file this morning it was corrupted and useless.  Banghead

Word knows this and suggests that I use the 'Open and Repair' option on the file menu.

a) I don't have such an option
b) If you know it needs this action why don't you just do it?

Fuck, the power has jusat gone off again!

Anyhoo....  ::)

My point was going to be that wouldn't it be nice if Micro$oft sorted out the basics and got Windoze working quickly and efficiently rather than adding thousands of features that nobody uses...

We feel your pain barman. I had the exact same thing happen to me last week. Would it repair it?... would it bollocks. A document that I'd been adding too for some months, gone, lost, corrupted, never to be seen again  cussing:

I went to your e-mail and printed another copy of my bingo card, job sorted  happy088

Mrs S#2's first experience with "pooters" was with an Amstrad word processor. For those who have never had the delights of working with one of these you HAVE to put in a floppy disk for each action you wish to take thus everything is automatically saved to a floppy. She still works that way, carefully inserting a disk and saving every few sentences. I have pointed out that this is no longer necessary sooooooooo many times and commented on her ever growing stack of floppies (all carefully labelled and filed) but whenever I do she points to posts, on so many sites, just like the ones above and smirks.
Annoyingly I know she is right  Banghead

PS She has recently conceded that the floppies are getting out of hand so has "invested" in a number of memory sticks and is slowly re-saving all her deathless prose, lesson plans and other work onto these because "They take up less space".
My suggestion of storage on a portable mega TB Hard Drive was met with derision as it is "Just something else that WILL go wrong eventually"
She points out that the Dead Sea Scrolls have survived millennia whereas pooters have only been around a relatively short time.
Again it's hard to fault the logic.

I have a Vista laptop here. About 20 months old running Vista.

It is getting slower and slower.

I have tried everything I can think of (and without going on forever, I know what to try) but it makes no odds.

I have now decided to flatten the hard drive and install XP.

I would love to put Linux on my little netbook but I cannot get it to function wirelessly.

Wireless connectivity is the reason - I don't know why. My old XP laptop fired up and ran very well until I connected it to the home wireless network. My new Vista laptop is the same.  When I was merely connecting via the Orange dongle, it would boot up really quickly - this doesn't happen any more and the point was further proved last week in Jockland when I turned off the wireless (although the hotel provided it) and used the dongle. Quick as you like.

Bastards.

The problem is that the linux community have followed Micro$hite and added endless features and 3D desktops to their distis... Linux is now nearly as slow as bastard Windoze!  Banghead

I had the same problem connecting my little Asus running Linux wirelessly. Spoke briefly to ISP techy who told me what to do. He said it is a common problem but twas easily sorted.
