Mobile phone directory
« on: July 09, 2009, 01:08:37 PM »
http://www.118800.co.uk/

You may already know about this but early next week over 15m UK mobiles will be on a directory which will mean that anyone will be able to access the numbers. eeek:

You may want to check your own number and make it ex directory if you are on there so that you are not swamped by unsolicited messages and calls.

There is a fulsome thread about this at the "other place" - it will help dispel any worries/myths you may have. Eh, Uncle?

Not at all Miss D  ~ many here do not go to "the other place" and this is worth noting.

My own opinion is that it is one more database that I do not want to be on but keeping off them is difficult because the present government loves any and all databases added to which where there is a buck to be made out of selling your information some bastard will want to grab it.

I make it a rule to refuse all personal information when asked for it by the likes of Currys ~ they have yet to refuse to take my money and I will not have a "loyalty card" of any sort.
I used to have a handle on life but it broke.

I've noticed that they all are keen to get a mobile number theses day. I had an update request from BAA recently that would not accept the revised data without "a valid mobile phone number" being entered. I declined.

I always put n/a on any form where it asks for my moble number. I also de-registered from the directory, took about 30 seconds all told.
I couldn't ask for better friends. I could ask for more NORMAL friends, but not better ones.

30 seconds  eeek:

Took me about 10 minutes  ::)

I also managed eventually to get delisted from T-Mobile's promotional text service (see thread in the Computer Room).
That took a bloody age too after many auto re-directions pressing different numbers.

Hi Mr Pastis, may I call you by your first name?

eeek: No! Just stop sending those promotional texts will you!

Ok Mr Pastis, we'll just have to go through a security check first, if you don't mind

Do I have an option there too?  ::)

I'm sorry Mr Pastis, but we're obliged to carry out a security check

And on, and on, and on it went ...  noooo:

And my personal favourite:

Them: "Will you confirm your telephone number?"

Me: "Of course"

Long silence ..............................

Them: "Hello????"

Me: "Hello"

Them: "Will you confirm your telephone number?"

Me: "Of course"

Them: "Well?"

Me: "You tell me what number you have for me and I'll confirm whether you have the right number"

Them: "That's not how it works, you have to confirm your number to me"

Me "I understand that but I cannot confirm it until you tell me what you think it is, then I can confirm whether it is right or I can tell you if it is not"

Them: "You don't understand sir ~ I am trying to confirm that we have the right number for you ~ it's for your security"

Me "It is even more secure if I don't tell you my telephone number don't you think? BUT I will confirm whether you are right or wrong if you tell me what number you have for me"

Long pause

Them: "Hello"

Me: "Hello"

Them: "Are you going to confirm your telephone number?"

Me: "Yes once you tell me what number you have, only then can I confirm it ....... unless this is a convoluted way of you trying to ask me to tell you my telephone number which you don't have and that I'm not going to do because that is not confirmation of a number you already have that is supplying you information you do not have. Not getting very far are we?"

Them: "But it is for your security"

Me: "You let me worry about my security sunshine and you worry about your misuse of English ~ Goodbye ....... click Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr."

Sorry Pastis, I forgot to tell you about the IVR idiot setting. Basically if you have to navigate one of those things just keep hitting the numbers that arent listed in its options (4 options given, press 5 etc). The system is designed to put you through to a human operator after  a few failed responses.
The universe is run by the complex interweaving of three elements. Energy, matter, and enlightened self-interest.
