A husband called William Dowling attempted to poison his wife Maureen by pouring mercury into her cup of tea in a bid to rekindle their relationship

Dowling mixed the substance into her drink when she visited his house every week, a court heard.

The 69-year-old, who was estranged from his wife, hoped she would become ill and need him to care for her. She became suspicious after noticing small silver globules of the metal in her tea and showed her daughter.

Paul Lewis, defending, said: "When his wife came to visit, he sought to cause her mild upset so he could care for her and resurrect the relationship."

He told officers that he still loved his wife and only existed when she was around. He said that he wanted her back and only felt alive when he was in her company.
