RESULTS DAY

I have to see the senior Cardiologist later this morning to get the results of his examination of the two week heart monitoring exercise I underwent a couple of weeks back. 
Dunno what it is about that hospital but just knowing I have to go there gets me wound up.

Thanks ~ the plan is they are looking to see if they can "laser" off the bit of the heart that is causing the electrical disturbances. Somehow I don't fancy the sound of that but I fancy living with this irregular rhythm even less. Chances are they will tell me there is nothing they can do and prescribe something that "may help" and I will have to tell them that the last time I took that particular drug the reaction put me in A&E. It's a path well trodden and frankly that is probably why I dread it. Willing to bet that although the appointment is with the top man I'll end up with a junior ~ which will be my first clue that there is nothing they can or are prepared to do. You only ever get to see the top man if it is a "sexy" operation that makes him look good. Bypass or transplant etc.

I had my 'results day' just before my holiday. I've been getting more and more short of breath over the past couple of years and the cardiologists have been investigating. I've had catheterisation, TOE, echos, exercise tests and even an MRI (great pictures!) over the past year. Their decision is to operate to close up the ASD (hole in the heart). They phoned me to arrange a pre-admission appointment. "Hang on" I said "i haven't decided yet" So I should be getting an appointment at the Heart Hospital to go through the options and of greater importance, the risk. However I said to provisionally book the operation for the end of the year.

Thinking about it I haven't received the appointment - must ring them.

Good luck Uncle ~ don't let my experiences put you off. I spent a lot of time giving advice to others with these damned implants and I have never yet let my own experiences stand in the way of saying how good they are.
I am one of the unfortunates whose condition is/was too far gone but today's news was much as expected. They can do nothing about the heart rhythm, they feel the heart beat is still too fast so have upped the beta blockers to absolute maximum allowed on a "Let's see what happens if" basis and asked me if I want more counselling!   

Oh yes and they told me to shed weight but conceded that it is impossible so long as I take the medication for diabetes.

The human body amazes me.

When I was in the Royal Brompton, there was a guy there (in his thirties) who was born with his heart up-side down. He would attend the hospital about every 2 months for corrective surgery and check-ups. No-one had noticed the problem until he was into his twenties.
Didn't seem to affect him at all.

Thanks Snoopy, already had open heart surgery back in 1991, just don't really fancy going through it all again.
