I am not dead yet Miss C ......although have been thinking murderous thoughts all week  evil:

T'internet to which I refer is my home one...during the day I am at work and using 'corporate' internet  whistle: - however that does  not allow me to access any of my personal sites like facebook , me emails, and other things I need  redface:

I have tallied up how much time I have spent on the phone ( for that read 'on hold' ) to my friends in India this week and it now comes to a grand total of 6 hours and 23 minutes  Banghead

I still have no internet....I am still awaiting an engineer to call me back

I have lodged a formal complaint

I have arranged for a new ISP to take over - howver that will not be until the 18th

Until then it looks like the battle will drone on - I am calm today - last night I went atomic  cussing:

It could be caused by many things, from duff router, duff cable/connection to someone at the ISP screwing up your account details.

CHAP is an authentication scheme used by Point to Point Protocol (PPP) servers to validate the identity of remote clients. CHAP periodically verifies the identity of the client by using a three-way handshake. This happens at the time of establishing the initial link, and may happen again at any time afterwards. The verification is based on a shared secret (such as the client user's password).

   1. After the completion of the link establishment phase, the authenticator sends a "challenge" message to the peer.
   2. The peer responds with a value calculated using a one-way hash function, such as an MD5 checksum hash.
   3. The authenticator checks the response against its own calculation of the expected hash value. If the values match, the authenticator acknowledges the authentication; otherwise it should terminate the connection.
   4. At random intervals the authenticator sends a new challenge to the peer and repeats steps 1 through 3.

CHAP provides protection against playback attack by the peer through the use of an incrementally changing identifier and of a variable challenge-value. CHAP requires that both the client and server know the plaintext of the secret, although it is never sent over the network.

Tried a different router and changed cables so my Columbo training would only lead me to one other conclusion ..... rubschin:

The "three-way handshake" happens thus;  The originator (you, hopefully)  sends an initial packet called a "SYN" to establish communication and "synchronize" sequence numbers in counting bytes of data which will be exchanged.  The destination then sends a "SYN/ACK" which again "synchronizes" his byte count with the originator and acknowledges the initial packet.  The originator then returns an "ACK" which acknowledges the packet the destination just sent him.  The connection is now "OPEN" and ongoing communication between the originator and the destination are permitted until one of them issues a "FIN" packet, or a "RST" packet, or the connection times out.  All the protocols of the Internet which need "connections" are built on the TCP protocol.  The "three way handshake" establishes the communication.  Much like you picking up your phone, getting a dial tone, dialing the number, hearing ringing, and then the other party saying "hello" or "mushi mushi."
