Rationing was the cause of the unadventurous eating habits of the 50s.
Rationing lasted until the middle of 1954 but of course many items were in short supply for years after that. My mother was a young newly wed in 1946 having learned her culinary skills from her mother during the war thus what we ate as a family was pretty much war time fare right through the 50s. I do remember that Macaroni was around but was usually served as an alternative sweet to Rice pudding. Macaroni pudding is made in much the same way. Milk/cream, eggs, sugar and the pasta instead of rice.
