Given that all pasta is made of, um, pasta why does no one advocate Macaroni Spaghetti?  rubschin:

Macaroni's what's left after the Spaghetti's been extruded  razz:

I am reminded of the Panorama 1st April programme of some years ago when Dimbleby senior kept a straight face with a story about the spaghetti harvest.

And Nick Macaroni spaghetti? You sure you didn't mean Spaghetti Cheese? But wouldn't that be Carbonara?

I was ten. The fact that it was done so straight by the authoritative voice of the BBC added to the lack of knowledge about spaghetti in the general populace just meant that many did accept it as the truth.
At that age I had not seen real spaghetti and I know that my parents had never eaten it because the first time they tasted spag bol was when I cooked it for them in the early sixties. Before that the only spaghetti they knew came out of a tin.

That about sums it up.  happy088

Rationing was the cause of the unadventurous eating habits of the 50s.

Rationing lasted until the middle of 1954 but of course many items were in short supply for years after that. My mother was a young newly wed in 1946 having learned her culinary skills from her mother during the war thus what we ate as a family was pretty much war time fare right through the 50s. I do remember that Macaroni was around but was usually served as an alternative sweet to Rice pudding. Macaroni pudding is made in much the same way. Milk/cream, eggs, sugar and the pasta instead of rice.

PS I still have my ration card ~ just in case like  ;D

True. They put me off certain foods for a very long time, until I learned how to cook them as I liked  angel1
