Bloody Microsoft #598867
« on: September 24, 2009, 09:37:56 AM »
So her employer wants to send SWWLTBO an important document that she will need for this afternoon. They phone me as she is out and ask if they can email it to me and will I be able to open it?

I reply I have Vista and XP Pro available as well as "Open Office" so I should be able to manage a document "What format is it in?"
"Oh it's a PDF ................. I think"

"OK Send it and I'll see what I can do"

Email with attachment pings into view. I try to open it with Vista ~ Vista says F*ck off I can''t read this you need to open it with "XP Pro with Front Page"
So I save it to a disc, insert disc into laptop that runs XP Pro with Front Page, thinking this is a bloody funny PDF Document.
Laptop screen bursts into life "File is corrupt.... cannot open ..... You need XP Pro with Front Page

I ring girly who sent document .... "I can't open it can you save it in another format and resend it?"

Girly: "No ..... I've never been able to open it, I'll pop a hard copy in the post, I've got a pile of them in the cupboard, can she make do without it today?" Banghead
I used to have a handle on life but it broke.

'Fraid so.

"Adobe reader could not open XXXXXXXX because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged"

Why is not life simpler ....

all Word / Excel  documents should be able to open regardless of what version of Word/ Excel you are using  evil:

All PDF's should open just using Adobe

There should just be a large , medium and small sized USB connections , instead of thousands of different sorts

Seem to me that the error lies with the employer rather than the computer systems. The girly who sent the document hadn't the sense to realise that it was already corrupted and that nothing would open it.

No doubt you are right Uncle. That's the trouble with Colleges of FE ~ they just can't get the staff.

The annoyance factor is that SWWLTBO told them two weeks ago that the new course she is starting off for them this afternoon would require her to have a "Tutor Pack" or at very least a "Register" and they have failed to send it to her. It will now be delivered to me on Monday.
Better late than never  ::)

All that said Miss D has the right of it ~ there is no valid reason why all such things should not be interchangeable ~ other than the profit motive of course.

Should ban gerls from the workplace - it's the only solution  lol:
