No way to get us to give up our cars.

Yours for ?1,000: a Caribbean cruise, or a return ticket to the Kyle of Lochalsh

The 4 figure rail fare has arrived at a platform near you. An eyewatering ?1002 for a rail ticket from Cornwall to Scotland.

Quote
Passengers wishing temporarily to swap the party culture of Newquay, Cornwall, for the more serene pace of life enjoyed in the sleepy coastal village of the Kyle of Lochalsh, in the Scottish Highlands, will have to pay ?1,002 for the privilege after the latest round of fare hikes. Enquiries carried out by The Independent found that a passenger could opt for a one-week luxury cruise in the Caribbean instead, together with flights to and from Puerto Rico, and still come home with ?50 change.

Do they seriously think we will not prefer to drive and save a fortune?  noooo:

Of course this also begs the question "Who, in their right mind, would want to go to Scotland?" but that is another story.

Simple explanation...  ::)

Environmentally aware publicly funded companies and agencies send staff everywhere by train as it is better for the environment innit... No matter that the trains run on diesel or electricity generated from burning coal...

Therefore the train companies have a guaranteed customer base no matter how high the price (or how cheap and environmentally friendly the alternative).

Sickening isn't it?  evil:

Yes it is sickening ~ but let's remember that not many "Environmentally aware publicly funded companies and agencies" send people from Cornwall to an obscure village station in the Highlands on a regular basis. Those that do wish to travel that route are more likely to be holidaying, going north for the shooting or similar.

Is it a one-train, non-stop service then...?  rubschin:

No - but I was talking about the first ever four figure fare on British railways and that is to travel from Newquay in Cornwall to Kyle of Lochalsh.

Actually Kyle of Lochalsh looks like a lovely place to visit.

Not likely as this is a newly announced fare. The Scottish station is in fact the "end of the line" for those travelling to Skye and I am told by SWWLTBO who grew up in Scotland, it is a popular holiday day trip destination but it is the arse end of nowhere (her words)

I only drew attention to the report as it seemed to me to indicate the general "stuff the public" attitude that prevails in so much of our lives these days.

Given that as part of my catastrophic long weekend I ended up paying ?88 for a single to Cardiff this does not surprise me.  noooo:

Its a complete cock up anyway, you can fly with Air Southwest from Newquay to Glasgow for less than ?250 return. Even with travel from there to the Kyle of Lochalsh its going to be faster and cheaper.  Anyone down here who wants to go to Scotland is savvy enough to check Newquay airport first.  lol:

There is that of course, but if you had to go for whatever reason you don't have to pay Trainline robbery.  noooo:
