Just been ripped off...again.
« on: November 10, 2009, 11:07:36 PM »
Saw these cranberries in the Asda last week.
Now I've never 'ad cranberries before, but I've read about them being dead good and 'olesome for you like, so I bought a pack.

Just wolfed the whole lot and then took a blimp at the label to see were they come from.
It didn't say, but it did say..................
....that they are 63% bloody pineapple juice ffs, and just a mere 37% cranberry, bloody conning bastards.

Print was so small I had to use me magnifying glass. evil:

Where can I get the REAL full and 'olesome berries from then ey, and while we're at it, pure beetroot juice please?

I am /we are NOT going to succum to a winter of colds and pig flu. Fruit veg garlic and spices are on the menu every day in the Growler household now.

That should ensure nobody comes close enough to give you any airborne virus.  ;)

Lidl usually have whole cranberries near to Christmas ~ in punnets on the Fruit & Veg section.

For beetroot juice try a health food shop or local vegetarian suppliers. Failing that buy whole beetroot and a juicer.

Can't you buy them anywhere all year 'round like? Don't even know where they come from tbh. Can you grow them in this country?

I think we've got one of those mincing machines somewhere within the depths of the kitchen cupboard, so I'll try mincing a beetroot.
Don't know if I'll like beetroot juice though tbh.
What goes with it if it tastes yucky like?

Beetroot is, in my opinion, a food of ultimate wrongness so I have no idea what would go with it.

As for Cranberries ~ they seem to be more American than British. I assume they mainly are imported and the season seems to start round about "Thanksgiving" and last until just after Christmas for fresh ones.

Thanksgiving Canada October 12th 2009
Thanksgiving USA November 26th 2009

As ever Wiki tells us where they come from:
Quote
Cranberries are a group of evergreen dwarf shrubs or trailing vines in the genus Vaccinium subgenus Oxycoccos, or in some treatments, in the distinct genus Oxycoccos. They are found in acidic bogs throughout the cooler parts of the Northern Hemisphere.

Cranberries are low, creeping shrubs or vines up to 2 m long and 5 to 20 cm in height; they have slender, wiry stems that are not thickly woody and have small evergreen leaves. The flowers are dark pink, with very distinct reflexed petals, leaving the style and stamens fully exposed and pointing forward. They are pollinated by domestic honey bees. The fruit is an epigynous berry that is larger than the leaves of the plant; it is initially white, but turns a deep red when fully ripe. It is edible, with an acidic taste that can overwhelm its sweetness.

Cranberries are a major commercial crop in certain American states and Canadian provinces (see Cultivation and uses below). Most cranberries are processed into products such as juice, sauce, and sweetened dried cranberries (e.g. Craisins), with the remainder sold fresh to consumers. Cranberry sauce is regarded an indispensable part of traditional American and Canadian Thanksgiving menus and European winter festivals.

Since the early 21st century within the global functional food industry, there has been a rapidly growing recognition of cranberries for their consumer product popularity, nutrient content and antioxidant qualities, giving them commercial status as a "superfruit".
