Thanks for all the advice and comments, it does help me feel a tad better.
This whole thing is actually starting to affect my health. I'm lying in my nest at night, tossing and turning, thinking about how the hell I can resolve this.
Hours of thinking and quite frankly I'm just going 'round in circles.
I've asked several of my customers what they'd do, and they all say pretty well much the same as you lot tbh.

This garage owner is making me feel like a common and petty crook now, and that does upset me, as joking aside ref. being a scouser, I do at least pride myself with honesty.
I'd never ever stitch someone up with a knowingly duff car, ESPECIALLY one of my oldest customers. What the hell would be the point?  noooo:
I swore on my kids lives to him that the car was running just fine whan I p/x'd it, but I really don't think he believes me even now.
He claims it couldn't have just gone faulty again by just simply standing on his forecourt for 10 months.
It does seem most odd, but that does appear to be the case. Modern electronics for you I guess? Shrugs:

Meanwhile, I'm in essence being held to ransom and / or blackmailed for my c/q for work carried out. Quite staggering.

However he must know that that will not hold any water in a court of law.
Pirates suggested letter WILL be used, but only as a last resort.

This all ended in tears btw.
I went in just before crimbo, two weeks after he initially refused to sign the c/q for what was owed to me for work done by me as a contractor.

I marched in and without faffing around with niceties, I simply but in quite a forcefully tone asked him two simple questions.
1) are you going to sign that c/q, and
2) are you going to carry on using me?

He just stood there and kept repeating himself, "I don't know"

I kept asking him and telling him that that was NOT a proper answer, and that if he answered properly and positively I would make a proposal to him.....didn't say what at this stage.
He screamed "YOU'VE had your chance, and with that he stormed off, scribbled on the c/q, threw it at me and screamed "now fuck off out of my showroom, NOW!"

I kept trying to tell him that I was going to arrange to have the car checked over at MY expense by a garage that specialises in that particular marque, but he just wouldn't let me finish my sentences, once again repeating over and over his desire for me to leave the premises.

My only regret was  there weren't any customers in the showroom whilst he was ranting.

What a total utter utter childish and totally unproffesional  cock he's proved himself to be ey?

Well so long as you got your money and the car is no longer your problem I should forget it. You can't reason with unreasonable people and your conscience should be clear as you have done all you could to resolve the matter. Frankly you are probably better off without him as a customer.
If nowt else you have proved you are the better man.  happy088

I'd like to think, and do believe that I remained proffesional.
I didn't raise my voice, but made it quite clear I wasn't going to walked all over, and I certainly didn't start swearing and ranting at him.
Stuff him. As you said, I'm better off without customers like him
