I have spent half the day on the phone to London local authorities  . After getting through the "Select options" pressing buttons bit most of the folks I have spoken to have been utterly unhelpful

I may have mentioned this before but IVR's have an 'idiot' setting which you can use to your advantage. When they give you an option pick a number outside of the range. After a couple of attempts the system should give up and pass you through to an person straight away.  As for the unhelpful folks, there isn't much I can suggest there other then asking of the calls are recorded if they don't tell you at the start and then asking for their line manager or for the complaints procedure.

I usually press 0 a number of times .... that normally gets me through to the switchboard.
