The lock is at the end of a long canalised section of the Trent which flows through Newark. The drop from high to low the largest on the river which means it is under mahoosive pressure.2. This causes constant damage to the (100 year old) mechanism3. Filling the lock is a mix of science and witchcraft as getting it wrong results in boats crashing and/or sinking4. Emptying it is a pain as two of the four bottom sluice gates are currently damaged5. The new control panel is a prototype prone to bugs. Staff who can fix these are all furloughed6. The location is prone to vandalism (Newark is surprisingly chavvy) and getting into any lock facility involves using more keys than a jailer 7. The lock leaks in about 20 places and you have to be specially trained to work on it. The leaks move about unpredictably.8. It is often the first lock that newbie boaters encounter when they collect their pride and joy from one of the two local marinas 9. It is a 42 mile round trip from Chez Nick

YOu wouldn't understand
I let some newbies through earlier. It was their first time out in their new boat. They told me they plan to come back through this evening (there is a way they can do this themselves using a special key). It will NOT go well
