However, I can remember when I first heard it. It was 1977, I was working Saturdays in a bookies and the manager was doing the crossword before we opened. He piped up that clue and I answered "grit", to which he replied, "so near, so far, pass us a rubber"

Why that particular memory of 34 years ago stays with me, I've no idea  confused:   Now, where did I put me glasses down five minutes ago?  rubschin:
