Gatwick is heaving today. A plane has just gone screaming over my head as it pulled up from an aborted landing.
Why did it abort or don't we get to hear those bits.
I remember my first solo....
Having flown perfect circuits all morning my instructor jumped out and said "now go and do it on your own".
Take-off was okay but it is pretty scary being up there on your own for the very first time.... you know that gravity is generally on your side and you can't get
stuck up there but arriving on terra firma somewhat faster than you should (and bending the club's aircraft) is not an encouraging prospect...
Anyhooo.... I simply
couldn't get the landing right... every time I was on 'finals' I'd be too low/high/fast/slow and had to announce
"Golf Whisky Oscar, going round" on the radio....
I went round, and round, and round...
After a while I could see a little crowd had gathered around the fire truck!
It had an air/ground radio so they could both hear my announcements (and no doubt take bets on the outcome of each circuit) and be where the action was if the fire truck was needed...
Suffice to say (and luckily for you lot
) I did finally nail it and make a reasonable landing - well, I walked away from it and the aircraft was not u/s....
