OK I'll ask.  Why do you have water pumps on the roof?
Well, whatever, nevermind

I suspect we may be talking about solar water heating panels here. Even I know that  ::)

Fuck knows...  noooo:

It is the worstest possible environment for them but it is the 'norm' here... Apart from at my house where I insisted it went in the boiler room...

So, solar panels (as Nick said), hot and cold water tanks and pump almost always on the roof...

Pumps last no time at all as they get water in them during the winter and the sun destroys the electronics (pressure switch, etc.) in the summer...

Hence I went up to change it and found two dead ones abandoned up there...

Aha

I guess they have to go somewhere and you don't want them in living space, flat roof?
Well, whatever, nevermind

They are almost always on the roof even if they have to add a bit of flat roof to accommodate... Shrugs:

My pump at the house lasted 12 years or so being indoors. This one I am replacing for a friend (because LL's big sister is coming to stay on Weds.  cussing:) has only been up there a year or two and almost completely unused...

The other downside of putting them on the roof is that the structure is reinforced concrete (because earthquakes) and the noise from the pump can sometimes resonate through the entire building...  noooo:

Yarp, ugly...  noooo:

I have to say, the solar panels and hot water tank on the roof work really well - we get 'free' hot water 10 months of the year... Cold tank and pump not so much...  noooo:

Ah the wonders of living in a country where solar heating stands a chance

We're thinking of installing a water pump, not for solar and not for drinking water (we actually have to reduce the pressure on that) but unpumped hot water pressure is becoming an issue in the UK as a tank header height (and ours is on stilts in the loft) isn't enough to get a decent flow through modern fancy looking taps.  And guess what we bought when we had every bathroom redone  doh:

Well, whatever, nevermind

Ah, 'champagne' taps... We have the same in the house but pumped is standard here as I said...

Got three pumps off the roof... Shops closed today (Kataklysmos) so can't buy and fit new one 'til tomoz...

Murphy and Darwin must be feeling sorry for you if you've been up on the roof during a Cataclysm festival and nothing went wrong...  eeek:

serious question:  if there's a power cut does the water still flow (albeit slowly)?
Well, whatever, nevermind

If the tanks are on the roof then yes... So it works here at the apartment...

At the house no, as the cold tanks are on the ground floor. facepalm:

I've been meaning to fit a 'bypass' so that the mains pressure ('bout 5 bar) feeds the hot and cold if the power fails but you know how it is...  redface:
