It is the worstest possible environment for them but it is the 'norm' here... Apart from at my house where I insisted it went in the boiler room...
So, solar panels (as Nick said), hot and cold water tanks and pump almost always on the roof...
Pumps last no time at all as they get water in them during the winter and the sun destroys the electronics (pressure switch, etc.) in the summer...
Hence I went up to change it and found two dead ones abandoned up there...
