Day off today  cloud9:

After the last few days of dealing with hyperactive kids on a sugar high as well as the constant power surges killing screens last night I'm happily enjoying the peace and quiet.  Thumbs:

Last night was great fun  noooo: It takes around 5-10 minutes to reset the servers and let the projector bulbs cool down enough before they can be restarted and then another 5 for them to warm up. So we'd go through all that for the affected screens then around 10-15 minutes later we'd have another surge and have to start all over again.  Banghead

So it is all digital, no film...?

Yep, under normal circumstances it makes things a lot easier and gives us leeway in being able to show the same film in multiple screens it if is a big release. Having said that we do have a mahoosive old film projector in the bar as a decoration...  rubschin:

Cool... and they distribute the movies via the Interwebz...?

Interweb and courier delivered encrypted hard drives

Well the new one is just a bleedin' great big black box with a lens on the front, the older one I'll see what I can do when I'm next in. Resolution wise I think it's 2,048 x 1,080 but I'm fairly sure we have the capability for 4k as well.

Doctors (for me) then Doctors (for her) then off to Londinium for our annual dabble in things arty at the Miniatures exhibition

Prices from £150...  Shocked:
Yep, there were some at £4k, best pieces were not for sale one given a notional £7.5k value.  We did buy one at £190 but were slightly disappointed by this years fare with it mostly being similar items to what we've seen before.  It is however a lovely exhibition and matching its title is very small in size (but over 500 pieces to see).  And it's free to view so if anyone is near the Mall with an hour to spare in the next 10 days give it a go.

Well, whatever, nevermind

You can plug a DVD player into it and it upscales without a problem.

My tellybox upscales but I just imagined you'd need a much higher resolution for such a big screen...  rubschin:

An issue is there's upscaling and there's upscaling.  There's no standard way albeit common approaches and certainly no standard source material to evaluate it.  Back in the late 2000s I was working with upscaling for military use and it's quite surprising what you can achieve but very hard to usefully deploy those methods for broadcast or film material where a constant moving image is what is wanted

Oh and a % of HD broadcast material has already been upscaled before it reaches your house so trying to usefully upscale it to 4k quality is at best going to be fraught and worse could introduce visible false artefacts

As for cinema display IIRC they have a slightly better spec of 4k than TVs but in any event it all comes down to milliradians as perceived by the eye.   I'd guess (don't know) that it's very similar between a Cinema screen from row R than a TV screen from across your living room to a 50 inch TV.
