{serious] My Ph.D was in the narrative structure of autobiography. How do people compress 50-80 years into a 300page account? They choose themes and give their life a shape, to invest it with meaning of some sort. I actually studied Victorians who had lost their religious faith. Weird I know, but their childhood religion had given them a teleological framework (look it up) which was whipped away post-Darwin. They had to find a new way of investing life with a shape and direction.Fascinating stuff. We all select our memories and tell our own stories about ourselves.

Exactly ...and stories are open to interpretation, corruption and challenge

I am often surprised by how the same event is recalled in completely different ways and has obviously been a completely different experience for the people involved.

I was talking to my brother about such a time only the other week - a significant event - he remembered certain aspects to the event that hadn't even registered with me and vice versa  - same physical event - completely different emotional and cognitive outcomes  rubschin:

Absolutely agreed. Think about it. We live our lives through stories: old photos, soaps, films, novels, history, news, newspapers, anecdotes, jokes, posts on here, the report I am writing now - all stories. Stories make sense of stuff. They are atavistic. Reality is just too messy, one damn thing after another, we select and shape to communicate
