Boiler scrappage scheme
« on: January 05, 2010, 04:09:30 PM »

No - not an opportunity for you to trade in your partner lads  whistle:

The government?s new central heating boiler scrappage scheme has now come into effect and is worth at least ?400 off the cost of replacing your old, inefficient boiler.  And a new A rated boiler is estimated to save around ?200 to ?235 a year off average home heating bills.

The only trouble is, to qualify your gas boiler must be at least 15 years old and fall into category G, or if it is an oil fired boiler it must be at least 25 years old and category G.  You must also replace it with an A rated boiler or a renewable heating system such as a biomass boiler or heat pump.  Electric heating boilers are not eligible.  As a result only an estimated 125,000 homes are likely to qualify and only available to those who live in England.

You will also need to be a homeowner or tenant and under 60 and you can only apply for the scheme if the boiler you are scrapping is in working order and is the main boiler used to heat the home.  If you are 60 or over you can apply for the scheme regardless of whether the boiler you are scrapping is in working order. However, it still needs to be the main boiler

Is there enough disclaimers in there to make sure hardly anyone is eligible for a discount ? rubschin:

Whatprice:

Our price information shows that it costs on average ?2235 per item/job (as of January 5, 2010) to have a new boiler installed
http://www.whatprice.co.uk

So that's a cost of ?1835 for a new boiler with the scrappage scheme. With a saving on the heating bill you're be only be in profit after about 8 years.  rubschin:

Ho hum. So for all the hassle of battling with fake charity Energy Savings Trust, you effectively get a refund of the VAT you've paid on your new boiler, taking a mid price of ?2,500 x 7/47 = ?372. Why not just scrap VAT on new boilers and cut out the middleman?

Typical of this useless bastard shower eh?  ::)

I'm eligible!

We spent the year before last boilerless as British Gas quoted the shirt off my back, one arm and one leg to repair or replace ours.  Then we found a nice local(ish) chap that was highly recommended who sorted it all and fitted a new control panel (that I'd already purchased) for about ?150, mmmm toasty!

The scheme looked tempting til you point out the amount of time before break even meaning your boiler is more than half way to being just as shit.  Likely to have upped sticks and moved by then...

Gary the Tank (whose brother recently died - mentioned elsewhere) is a damn good heating engineer. The scheme will work well for companies with big contracts for local authorities, although not so well for him as a self-employed, by word-of-mouth chap. Either way, he maintains to this day that the new sort of boilers you are obliged to fit - combi condensers - really have fundamental flaws with British weather. You might get a better boiler now, but it will go wrong and cost you a lot more in the long run.

Agreed...

We had an ancient boiler in Maidenhead which BG finally refused to fix (even when we sourced the 'unavailable' parts for them).

Replaced it with a all-singing-all-dancing condensing boiler which was shite... Never worked properly.

I've got a mahoosive fifty thousand Watt open room boiler here...  cloud9:
