Unidentifiable noises of unknown origin
« on: January 09, 2010, 01:31:07 PM »
All buildings make noises - creaks, squeaks and suchlike, more or less predictably.

House 2, with which I am still not entirely familiar, makes all kinds of unexpected noises, like a farting baby, which don't seemto relate to its fabric.

I just heard a sort of clunking rustle. Naturally I rushed off to find out what it was, but it had gone away.  cussing:

I sti down again and what now, a bit creak from upstairs. Off I go again. Nothing  cussing:

Do houses just spontaneously make puzzling noises?

Yep.

Lived in many houses and they all make strange noises. One cottage was haunted, there are those who may scoff but I am certain it was.  The one which really used to drive me barmy was an old farm house which had mice scratching about in the eves. It disturbed my sleep and wound me up as the poison/traps hadn't worked and some of my property was going to be ruined. evil:

All houses creak, crack and generally make odd noises. Temperature changes have a lot to do with the various sounds. This place is never quiet. 3 in the morning seems to be the noisiest time.
I used to have a handle on life but it broke.

I was awake at 2 this morning listening to an odd, intermittent tapping sound coming from the wall behind the headboard.  rubschin: It was different from the usual creaks. I couldn't figure out what was causing it.

As the outside temperature goes down, the wooden boards and metal parts that makes up the house contract a little. The metal parts contract more than the wood does, so the nails, pipes, air ducts, and so on rub against the wood. Also, wood rubs against wood. All that rubbing can make creaking sounds. At night, when the whole house is cooling down and everyone is quiet, we may hear a lot of creaking.

Don't think so:

these woodborers create a tapping or ticking sound that can be heard in old building rafters during quiet summer nights.

Bit too chilly for them at the moment.
