I was once paid twice for one job (a similar amount of dosh, too). The first payment came from the client who instructed in the first place; the second payment came (eventually) from a company who nicked the idea, infringed copyright, lied through their teeth and finally when confronted with the evidence coughed up.

Not quite the same conundrum as yours but I'd done nothing for the second payment... other than argue. I say buy a safe investment for a rainy day  razz:
