Up to 200,000 jobs are under threat as local authorities are forced to make cutbacks, the BBC survey has shown.

Eight authorities, including Kirklees, Leeds, City of Bradford, Sheffield, Stoke-on-Trent, Lincolnshire and Surrey, told the BBC 1,000 or more posts might go within five years.

Last week, Nottinghamshire said it would scrap 2,000 jobs over three years, while Birmingham City Council is cutting 2,000 posts.

Brian Strutton, national secretary of the GMB union, said: ?It would be impossible to have a reduction of this level without a massive loss of frontline services. It would have a severe impact on the elderly and disabled.?

The alarming picture emerged from 49 councils who told the BBC 25,000 jobs would be lost out of a combined workforce of 256,000 in the next three to five years. With 2million people employed by local authorities, 200,000 jobs may be under threat, the GMB says.
Seven in ten of the councils also told the BBC researchers they intended to make budget cuts of between five per cent and 20 per cent

Yep that's about the sum of it all  noooo:

Would I be being overly cynical if I asked whether or not these are the authorities paying their executives pay rises of up to ?40k?  Banghead
