Shouldn't they be at school?
« on: March 08, 2010, 12:34:14 PM »
Just back from Harlow, buying a few bits for my hospital stay.

Place is awash with school age kids. Some in little 'gangs' and others with with their parent(s) (and the odd one or two with sprogs of their own)

Didn't realise truancy was such a problem.

True, although most inset days seem to either be a Friday or tacked on to either end of a holiday.

I will grant you that Harlow is the pits though.

At one time I was the manager for a number of sites we guarded in Harlow. Getting local staff was a nightmare.
We used to bus them out from Barnet and Enfield.

 noooo:

Wanted a couple of books as well. Nearest Harlow has to bookshop is a poorly stocked W.H. Smiths. Came away empty handed.

I buy a lot of books from local charity shops. They always have something suitable to take into hospital. Half a dozen paperbacks for a couple of quid and if I don't like them after a few pages then there is always someone in the ward with nothing to read.

Another tip ~ take a pen (biro) or two. They always want you to fill out a menu and no bugger ever has a pen, least of all the nurses.

I also always take in a small tin of Johnsons baby talc as one gets very sweaty in the nether regions laying about in bed (Hospitals are either too hot or too cold, never right) and the staff never ever let you take enough showers.

Good thinking, Marylebone High Street is a stone's throw away from the hospital. I can pop in the charity shop there before admission.

I have been surprised on my last two admissions to discover that they now allow mobiles on the wards ~ as long as you have it on "silent" so as not to annoy everyone else with a loud ringing or bleeps as you text ~ it seems that they have at last realised that it doesn't interfere with their equipment. All the nurses now carry their "mobies" as they like to call them  ::)

The "authorities" don't even seem to mind/notice when you put the mobile on charge in their sockets! eeek:

Guy in the bed next to mine last time I was in was using 3 sockets ... His mobile charger, a portable DVD player, and one for his rechargeable electric razor. When the girl wanted to do an ECG she asked him, very pointedly, if he minded unplugging one of his many appliances so she could plug in the ECG machine. He agreed to pull his razor off charge very reluctantly. noooo:

When I was in there for tests they let me use the mobile.  happy088

I've got a netbook and I've borrowed a mobile connect dongle from work. It's a bit slow but I might still be able to logon from the ward ~ depends on the signal.

One of my favourite tricks is to pull the "Diabetes" menu on my fellow patients.

Little advertised on the hospital menus if at all but as a diabetic I can have extra grub when in hospital. As well as a bedtime sandwich, denied to "ordinary patients", I can ask for "off menu" items. One I particularly like is breakfast. Whilst everyone has to eat porridge or cornflakes or go without I can ask for and get Beans, Bacon and Scrambled Egg. It annoys the hell out of the nurses too  eveilgrin:

Apparently it is all to do with making sure I get enough Carbohydrates
