Was the trip necessary?

A 17 year old school girl from Lanark Grammar has sadly been killed in a coach crash in last night's bad weather. Tragic indeed but where was this school coach trip going? Alton Towers.
Can anyone offer me any explanation as to why Grammar School pupils are being taken by coach on a 480 mile round trip to Alton Towers? Hardly an educational venue is it?

School trips, when I was at school, were designed to enhance the education we were receiving. We went to Lulworth Cove to study coastal erosion, history and the effects of tourism. We went to Bath to see the Roman Baths and the architecture of the Royal Crescent. We visited Stone Henge and Avebury. We went to Stratford upon Avon, visited the sights associated with Shakespeare and then watched a production of Hamlet. All educational trips. WTF were they going to learn at Alton Towers Theme Park ?

What a waste of a young life.

If matters can be made any worse the party was only 12 miles from their starting point when the accident happened.

I think the point I am trying to make is that such trips are an invitation to disaster and should not be undertaken unless it is absolutely necessary.

I spend days in fear when the THW goes on a school jolly. Stupid perhaps but there just seem to be so many things that can and do go wrong when teachers start organising trips. That is probably very unfair on the vast majority of teachers and perhaps it is my age but they all seem so young and cocksure these days. I find it very hard to trust them.
