HMS Albion, which was on its way to Spain to pick up troops, "may be able to be of help", said Mr Brown.

So the RN are using a ship that they happened to have in the area to bring home some 200 soldiers who got stranded in Spain on their way back from Afghanistan.

Meanwhile Gordon has put it about that HE is sending HMS Ark Royal to pick up tourists. Well only if the MOD can spare her, only if her replacement is already in the Med and only if the Spaniards agree to let her dock. It makes some sense when you remember that aircraft carriers are equipped to evacuate troops and thus have loads of spare room and supplies.
Good move on Gordon's part ~ would he have said/done this if there wasn't an election on? ..... Somehow I doubt it.

Ark Royal - Capacity of 300 apparently... more focussed on carrying aircraft and stuff...

The words "piss up" and "brewery" spring to mind

They are now back-tracking saying that his words were taken out of context, and that the coaches are leaving Dover tonight. If that's the case, why not liaise with other countries and transport some back over there at the same time.  Banghead Banghead Banghead

Meanwhile, reported on local news down here, A Professor from Southampton University that is an "expert" on volcanoes has flown out to Iceland (via god knows where). He has warned that this volcano has a big brother and historically it erupts 12 - 18 months later  scared2:

Don't panic Mr Mannering ...it is all back to normal (apart from those people that actually want to get home or fly anywhere  lol:  )

...and why...because of new research that says it is safe to fly through some ash.

Has anyone seen this research ...of course not  whistle:
Will anyone admit it is because the airlines had a complete paddy with the authorities ...of course not .
Will anyone from the Govt admit they completely ballsed this up ...of course not
Will the insurance companies pay out...you get the drift by now   noooo:

Far be it for me to say "I told you so!"

BUT

How long before they decide that it isn't dangerous to fly after all...? I give it a week absolute maximum...  ::)

Thought all these airports were supposed to be fully open again, or have they closed them again? confused:

Directly under the flight path for L'pool airport here, and not 'eard or seen a single one yet.

No doubt DS will come on and suggest that the scousers have nicked all the radios, wheels and hub caps off them while they've been parked up for the last week. ::)

No engine noise but you can still hear whining. It's from the scousers unable to jet off to Benidorm.  ;)

Heard/saw a jet last night @10:45, presumably going into Heathrow.

There were loads of BA flights milling around waiting for the airports to open at 10pm...

I was watching them here.

That first flight from Toronto that landed just before ten had the most amazing flight - it arrived over Belfast then did a load of holding patterns over the Isle of Man before going to fly over Dublin.... then it flew back across the Irish sea and did more holding over Manchester before finally routing into Heathrow from the East....

Very environmentally friendly I'm sure....  noooo:
