Is it just me or is this election boring others too?
« on: April 29, 2010, 11:09:35 AM »
I really am bored with this election ~ the name calling is pathetic, the policy announcements are meaningless and the truth dares not raise its head.

The only people who seem to be getting themselves worked up about it are the members of the fourth estate. I don't remember previous elections being so bloody tame that the media had to work so hard to try and get some excitement going. Nick Robinson seems to be about the only one who is enjoying any of it.

As for the "Leaders Debates" what a waste of time they are.  I hear that Private Eye are saying they are like BOGOFF offers or Three for the Price of Two ..... but most of all the speakers are simply not telling us anything. Has anyone here actually heard anything that has made them think "Oh I must get to the polling station and put my X next to that party?"

I can see us ending up like the French ~ resigned to being ruled by a bunch of malcontents and neerdowells out to feather their own nests and not actually caring what laws they pass. An occasional burning of a few sheep, blockading of a port or two or, in extremis, shut down the air traffic control for a bank holiday weekend until we get what we want and the rest of the time simply ignore what is happening in parliament.
I used to have a handle on life but it broke.

I agree...

None of the parties are talking about the really big issues - immigration, Europe, etc. and those that are (BNP, UKIP, etc.) have no TV time...

The troughers have it nicely sewn up between them don't they?

They do indeed. As for policies ~ hardly a coat of paint between them when you look at it.

And what use is 24/7 news coverage on fifty separate channels if none of them ask about the big issues...?  noooo:

I'm sure it was better when you either read about it in the next day's newspaper or had to go along to a public meeting to keep up to date.

There really aren't any orators left now. I suppose Hague just about scrapes in but a public meeting addressed by Old Michael Foot, Tony Benn, Jeremy Thorpe or Harold MacMillan was an event. Even a public speech from Neil Kinnock was worth listening to. All as mad as hatters but they spoke well. Foggy, Clegg and Compo just don't measure up to their predecessors.

I would if I thought it would make any difference.

I am just waiting for the election night comeuppances, principally Balls and Bercow, hopefully Blears. After that it will be a shambles

I wonder if having over 300 seats where the incumbent is standing down has anything to do with the boredom factor. There are so very few characters left.

SWWLTBO says it's because we no longer know anyone who is standing. She may be right as this is the first election I can recall where I know none of them ... she, having grown up in a very political household, knew many. She has fond memories of one Scottish Tory MP, now dead, who tried to bed her when she was 15.

An afterthought ~ I have met Alan Johnson ..... he was a prat and prolly still is. Leopards and spots etc.
