The last time I shot competitively was a few years ago at a TA barracks, very much a friendly event but I was pleased with the result and me old marksman skills hadn't completely deserted me
The longest range I encountered was the 1000 yd at Bisley, no telescopics, just the eye on the distant target and guessing for wind velocity. If you were down the butts you could hear the whistle, crack, thud as the bullet ended up in the earth bank
