The Quail farm visit was a huge hit with the boys (I hadn't told them we were going) They have talked to the farmer, handled day old chicks and been given all sorts of info about rearing the birds. They then went on a tour of his chicken runs and cages. He specialises in rare breeds and in particular Chinese birds. All very interesting and both boys were reluctant to leave after an hour so they got a tour of the cow sheds as well and then he showed us his private smokery where he had stacks of cheeses smoking away. He and I then discussed smoking quail, other birds, cheeses, and trout as a method of preservation whilst the boys played with his dog (a fvcking huge beast).
A very nice man and we shall be doing some business I foresee. The boys are very enthusiastic about earning their pocket money breeding quail and the farmer has promised to stock them with some choice birds when the aviary is ready.
All in all an afternoon well spent ~ at least as far as the male side of the family were concerned ~ SWMBO found it all a bit whiffy and the THW preferred to spend the day with her B/F and his parents.
Will the boys be as happy when you are chopping their heads off with an axe in the garden I wonder...?  rubschin:

One does not use an axe but a pair of kitchen scissors and the boys are eager to have a go, however all killing will be done by the Butcher (lil Bruvver) or at least under his supervision. They did not worry when the Farmer found some of the day olds (he had about 500) had died and he got the boys gathering them up and throwing the tiny corpses into the bin kept for the purpose,. He then showed them the corpses of two chickens that had died yesterday. One from old age, the other awaiting the vet's verdict.  The Farmer was very matter of fact about it with them (he had tipped me off that he would show them this side of things but I didn't warn them). The boys simply accepted that this was all part of the process. I have to say I was proud of them. They asked whether he ate any of his own birds and he said yes. They decided that they would too. Minimus, who is allergic to eggs, wants to ask his consultant if he can try a quail egg as the farmer told him that he knew of people who are allergic to eggs but who can and do eat quail eggs.

I thought that too. But then I read about Nick's dream. Blears, Harman, Widdecombe and Slotgob were mentioned. Scissors and quails didn't seem to bad after that image

Large Scissors.
Their necks are no thicker that my finger. You try getting one to stand still whilst you swing an axe at it. Little b@st@rds run like b*ggery the whole time anyway. Best method of despatch is to pick it up. Hold it in one hand with the head sticking out and SNIP!
