One homeopathic remedy that I know works is Rhus Tox. Available from Holland & Barratt, among others, it is excellent for joint pains, arthritis etc.
A vet recommended it for an Afghan Hound I used to own and it relieved his arthritis immeasurably. No way the dog could have read the label or known what we were giving him. My late mother was so impressed by the improvement in the dog that she used it for her own arthritis (all silly comments accepted at this point so save yourselves the trouble) and pronounced it excellent.
There is certainly something to be gained from some "natural remedies" ..... after all Aspirin was originally found in Willow Bark.

And penicillin is mould. Not all pharmaceuticals are made in test tubes. I met a goat once who got headaches and cured them by eating willow!! eeek:

I will also endorse that remedy, although I have never used it on a dog or a parent.
