Filling my shoes with soap appears to have done the trick. I am now on the train (though it's not moving yet)

Get werk in Paris and travel by Eurostar 1st Class ~ the food is sooooooooooooooooo good it is hardly worth getting off the train on arrival because you'll not find better.
