I know a man locally who removes tree stumps by drilling holes in them and inserting explosives! A sort of Fred Dibnah of the arboreal werld. 

 

Watched him last summer when he was asked, by a local farmer, to remove several old oak tree stumps from a hedge row. He prepped all the stumps first and then set them off one after another. It was like being on the Somme!  

Police helicopter appeared within three minutes of the last explosion. All they got to see was a neat line of holes and a lot of fresh soil. The stump remover was gone before the rozzers arrived so I assume he doesn't have a licence for explosives.
