I basically took the whole thing apart (every last nut, bolt and screw) and am putting it all back together again....

Good plan.  I guess you had the time and space (and patience and ability and fast regrowing knuckles)  I was dragged up on Cortinas which are doddles to work on, there's just sod all space on a Mini.
