As a smoking drinker with a passion for all things with an internal combustion engine, I confidently predict that I am going to get right royally screwed.

I have spent the past few evenings carefully reviewing the family finances, looking for places where we can economise, places where money can be put to best use, places where I may be able to secure what few assets we have and I have concluded that I can afford one bullet. Question is ~ which who will it have to be? rubschin:
I used to have a handle on life but it broke.

And which part of the application of a VAT increase of 2.5% did you fail to comprehend?

If you stop to think about it nor would a rise in UK rates of tax on alcohol and tobacco.

On the subject of tax on Ciggies I see that the average price of a typical pack of 20 in the UK was £6.28 in March of this year. The VAT increase will take that up by 15.7pence to around £6.44. That means the government tax take from every 20 cigs is now £4.98.

Far more effective that slapping on the traditional 5pence a packet.
