If she'd have draped herself across it, she would've been a heroine and then who knows?

Castro's PA, Miss D statues, free salsa lessons for life, personal dolphins and pool, exclusive control of cigar exports to Cyprus?

Drapes on a tank you say ....isn't that a bit more Tipsy's style  ;)

Anyways they get very precious about certain things ...the tank being one of them . The country is filled with propaganda and good willed sentiments but the reality is rationing, total lack of investment in the infrastructure and the people and an underbelly of discontent  noooo:

Pure propoganda ...they have free health care and education afor ALL their citizens and speak to any of the tour company reps and stuff and they all spout the positives about this system. However we spent a day with a guy who drove us around and he told it like it is and showed us the horsepickles...looked like it was a building that had been bombed out during the war. In fact the best building . the most modern building and the most well maintained,  was the Communist party headquarters  noooo: - equity for all eh  noooo:

Slightly different in Havannah as this has got some decent roads and facilities but elsewhere in the country all a bit tragic really. Yes they are there but that doesn't guarantee a standard of care of education . They all receive ration books for food. Are only allowed to work a maximum of 8 hours a day and up to a maximum number of days per week and are not allowed to get a second job to supplement their income because that is not the socialist way .

It is almost like a land that time has forgot in that there is hardly any mechanisation. Farming still done by hand , transport consists mainly of horse and cart or a bicycle. People huddle on the roads and hitch hike everywhere but they often have to wait for hours and at night there is absolutely no lighting except for what the stars provide - there are so many accidents  noooo:

Tragic though it is it confirms my suspicions; the person who was spouting on about it (their healthcare programme) was, as I thought either duped or lying through her teeth.  noooo:

There is no doubt that the machine that is the Government is ever present in all areas. The difficulty for these people is that they are restricted any choices. To leave the country they have to apply to the government as no one is 'entitled' to a passport. They have to go through months of interviews and processing and most of the time application is refused.

Fishermen etc are only given enough fuel for their boats for a return trip so that they would be unable to traverse the ocean .

Once Russia disbanded they have been severely restricted in terms of trading partners and mutual agreements and most people were expecting the government to follow in the same footsteps. It would appear that most are hoping that once Fidel and then his brother lose power their country will follow the same path and open up to a more free market based economy.
